Why is a raven like a writing desk?... it’s likely you’ll soon know.

Edgar Allan Poe was known most famously for his writing, "The Raven", in a time when romanticism was rampant and prose was cryptic and mysterious, something for which Poe was widely known for.

He was an odd fellow, detached and somewhat inept, socially. A Capricorn, in fact; Poe never really knew his parents, which one could argue is a Capricorn downfall. His father left the family early in Poe’s childhood, and his mother passed of tuberculosis when he was only an unsuspecting three years old. He held troubled relationships with both his brother and sister and went to live instead with an older couple in another state.

His most prominent works touch upon and explore topics such as death, decomposing this or that or whatnot, premature burial, mourning, grief, and the dead coming back to life.

The sun moves through Capricorn at the time of year when everything has died, has begun the phase of hibernation, has turned a page in the cycle of life. The days are shortened, the cold, dark nights much longer, much darker, much colder, as were the words and works of Poe.

Poe played with the lines and boundaries of the real, the true, and the imaginary. Very un-Capricornian, in this respect, though the underlying message of his collected tales overall is one of desolation.

The very word ’desolation’ means "barren", like the idea of winter. Void of hope. Without life.

As the Raven came to him each time to offer the message with its tapping and rapping, Poe realized each time that his hopeless sense of hopelessness was inevitable, maybe even deserved, a feeling of utter isolation.

Does this sound like the shadow side of Capricorn? Truly.

His last words were "Lord, help my poor soul."

Mercury is in Capricorn and is therefore applying a conjunction with long-time resident here, Pluto, the god of the underworld, barren of all life or light.

Uncovering what has been buried beneath pain, darkness, or secrets needs to come to light.

The impact of your words, whether they rhythm or not, are powerful now until the so-close inching of a conjunction on the 18th before Mercury turns retrograde. See, Mercury will not exactly connect with Pluto yet. Mercury will come as close as 15° Capricorn, but Pluto is now at 16 degrees, meaning that from now until January 29th, when Mercury finally connects with Pluto at 17° Capricorn, your honesty is paramount, your words holding weight, and your influence having much charisma.

This goes for whether you have nasty things to spout or uplifting words to share.

Do avoid any temptations to blur the lines and boundaries of the real, the true, and the imaginary as Poe preferred to do.

If there’s something you need to share with someone or express, convey, confront, or simply ask-- do be honest. Brutally honest. Because either way, you’ll be found out. Also, know that secrets may be held from you, despite your honesty, or you’ll be privy to keep secrets from others.

The seventeenth degree of Capricorn was assigned to the idea of immersion by Marc Edmund Jones, suggesting that this degree holds power in influence in a way beyond what one could likely be capable of on one’s own. In other words, by accepting the reality of things, and what you cannot change or have no power of, your "scroll" if you will-- as though your message could be symbolically flown to whomever is assigned to receive it- will soar boldly on its own.

Be mindful that, like the reasons for such, these long, dark nights will pass as does the season of winter when spring announces itself. As Mercury moves through Capricorn, directly and through retrogradation, allow reason to be your guide, and honesty to be decoratively immersed with both articulation and deliberation. Not desolation.

Desolation, nevermore...

Quoting from The Raven:

"And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted-- nevermore!
